Ireland — An Post's notice and the Eircode
Ireland is a member of the European Union and the eurozone, so EU customs rules apply to a parcel sent from Georgia, and a consignment's value and the customs relief thresholds are in euro. The standard VAT rate in Ireland is 23%.
According to An Post, the recipient pays the customs charges on a parcel from outside the EU and, where one applies, an administration fee. The recipient is told what is due by postcard — and by email and SMS too, if the sender provided those details.
The charges can be paid online, using the customs reference number on the card, in the An Post app or at any post office — but not by phone. If they are not paid by the "Pay by Date", the parcel is returned to the sender.
According to Eircode, more than 35% of addresses in Ireland share their address with at least one other property, and Eircode gives every address its own seven-character code. That is why it helps if the recipient's address includes their Eircode.
How much does it cost to send a parcel to Ireland?
The cost depends on the weight of the parcel and the rate in force.
Send us the weight of your parcel and the destination city in Ireland to get the current price.
What to know before sending to Ireland
Below are the official European Union rules that apply when a parcel is received. These are not Parcello's own terms.
Ireland is a founding member of the eurozone
Ireland joined the European Union in 1973 and was among the first countries to adopt the euro, on 1 January 1999. Euro banknotes and coins entered circulation on 1 January 2002. The euro replaced the Irish pound at a fixed rate of €1 = 0.787564 pounds, and the period in which both currencies circulated ended on 9 February 2002. The Central Bank of Ireland exchanges Irish pound banknotes and coins for euro with no time limit.
VAT rate
The standard VAT rate in Ireland is 23%.
The recipient pays the customs charges
According to An Post, Ireland's national postal operator, every parcel arriving from outside the EU must come with electronic customs data before An Post can deliver it. The recipient pays the customs charges and, where one applies, an administration fee — online, in the An Post app or at any post office; payment by phone is not possible. If the charges are not paid by the stated date, the parcel is returned to the sender.
Eircode — a separate code for every address
Eircode is Ireland's postcode system, launched in July 2015. It is a seven-character code: the first three characters identify the principal post town, and the last four the individual address. Every residential and business address has its own Eircode. According to Eircode, more than 35% of addresses in Ireland share their address with at least one other property.
Parcels go through customs
Georgia is not a member of the European Union, so a parcel sent to Europe goes through customs when it enters the EU. The recipient may be charged value added tax (VAT) and, in some cases, customs duty as well.
Gifts under €45 are exempt
When one private individual sends a parcel to another for personal or family use and its value does not exceed €45, the consignment is exempt from customs duty and VAT. The relief applies only to occasional, non-commercial gifts — a birthday parcel, for example. If the value exceeds €45, VAT is charged on the whole consignment.
A new rule applies from 1 July 2026
The European Union has abolished the customs duty exemption for consignments valued under €150. In its place, from 1 July 2026 a flat customs duty of €3 applies, calculated per tariff line rather than per parcel. The rule is aimed primarily at consignments from online shopping and is temporary — it runs until 1 July 2028.
Separate rules apply to alcohol and tobacco
Gift relief does not fully cover alcohol and tobacco: VAT and excise duty are charged on these products regardless. Relief from customs duty applies only to strictly limited quantities — 50 cigarettes, or one litre of spirits, for example.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a parcel take to reach Ireland?
Parcels leave Georgia every Sunday. A parcel reaches the recipient within 2–3 weeks of being sent.
How does the recipient pay customs charges in Ireland?
According to An Post, the recipient receives a postcard showing what is due and can pay online, in the An Post app or at any post office. Payment by phone is not possible, and if the charges are not paid on time, the parcel is returned to the sender.
What is an Eircode?
An Eircode is Ireland's seven-character postcode, and every address has its own. More than 35% of addresses in Ireland share their address with at least one other property, so the Eircode makes a specific address easier to find.
