Sending a parcel from Georgia to Belgium

Diplomatic relations between Georgia and the Kingdom of Belgium were established on 5 June 1992, and Georgia's diplomatic mission to Belgium opened in 1993. In June 2023 the two countries' foreign ministries signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation.

For Georgians living in Belgium, receiving a parcel from home is often a simple way of keeping a connection to family, friends and the place they came from.

You give us the parcel and the details we need, and we help organise the process of getting it to Belgium.

In Belgium, charges are paid before delivery

Belgium is a founding member of the European Union and a member of the eurozone, so EU customs rules apply to a parcel sent from Georgia, and a consignment's value and the customs relief thresholds are in euro. The standard VAT rate in Belgium is 21%.

According to bpost, if a parcel received from outside the EU is subject to VAT, customs duty or a customs formalities fee, the recipient pays it before the parcel is delivered — preferably through the My bpost app or Track & Trace, and in exceptional cases at a post office.

If bpost needs more information, for a gift it asks for an email from the sender stating the contents of the parcel, its value (up to €45) and the fact that it is a gift. If the recipient does not respond to the request within 14 days, the parcel is returned to the sender.

That is why it helps if both sender and recipient know in advance what is in the parcel and what it is worth — answering such a request then takes very little time.

How much does it cost to send a parcel to Belgium?

The cost depends on the weight of the parcel and the rate in force.

What to know before sending to Belgium

Below are the official European Union rules that apply when a parcel is received. These are not Parcello's own terms.

  • Belgium is a founding member of the eurozone

Belgium is a founding member of the European Union and was among the first countries to adopt the euro, on 1 January 1999. Euro banknotes and coins entered circulation on 1 January 2002. The euro replaced the Belgian franc at a fixed rate of €1 = 40.3399 francs, and the period in which both currencies circulated ended on 28 February 2002. The National Bank of Belgium exchanged franc coins until the end of 2004, and still exchanges franc banknotes for euro with no time limit.

  • VAT rate

The standard VAT rate in Belgium is 21%.

  • Three official languages

Belgium has three official languages — Dutch, French and German. Its capital is Brussels.

  • Proof may be requested for a gift

According to bpost, Belgium's national postal operator, if a parcel received from outside the EU is subject to VAT, customs duty or a customs formalities fee, the recipient pays it before the parcel is delivered. If bpost needs more information, for a gift it asks for an email from the sender stating the contents of the parcel, its value (up to €45) and the fact that it is a gift. If the recipient does not respond to the request within 14 days, bpost returns the parcel to the sender.

  • Parcels go through customs

Georgia is not a member of the European Union, so a parcel sent to Europe goes through customs when it enters the EU. The recipient may be charged value added tax (VAT) and, in some cases, customs duty as well.

  • Gifts under €45 are exempt

When one private individual sends a parcel to another for personal or family use and its value does not exceed €45, the consignment is exempt from customs duty and VAT. The relief applies only to occasional, non-commercial gifts — a birthday parcel, for example. If the value exceeds €45, VAT is charged on the whole consignment.

  • A new rule applies from 1 July 2026

The European Union has abolished the customs duty exemption for consignments valued under €150. In its place, from 1 July 2026 a flat customs duty of €3 applies, calculated per tariff line rather than per parcel. The rule is aimed primarily at consignments from online shopping and is temporary — it runs until 1 July 2028.

  • Separate rules apply to alcohol and tobacco

Gift relief does not fully cover alcohol and tobacco: VAT and excise duty are charged on these products regardless. Relief from customs duty applies only to strictly limited quantities — 50 cigarettes, or one litre of spirits, for example.
